4.2 Assess National Significance and Determine Suitability and Feasibility
The planning team, in consultation with regional and other park staffs, assesses national significance; evaluates the resources and study area against suitability criteria (to be suitable an area must represent a resource not adequately represented in the National Park System or protected by another managing authority); and evaluates the resources and study area against feasibility criteria (to be feasible the resource must be of sufficient size to ensure protection and accommodate public use and must also be capable of being efficiently administered). |

4.3 Document Evaluation of National Significance, Suitability, and Feasibility
The planning team documents the evaluation of national significance, suitability, and feasibility for transmittal to the regional office and the Chief, WASO Division of Park Planning and Special Studies.
If the regional director and the Chief, WASO Division of Park Planning and Special Studies concur that the resource(s) is not be nationally significant, or if the criteria for suitability or feasibility are not met, the SRS would conclude at this point. The planning team reports the findings through the National Park Service and Department of Interior to Congress (the findings may include optional recommendations for local, state, private, or federal actions to protect important resources, etc.). The planning team also publishes a notice of termination in the Federal Register. |
