Interpretive Center/Headquarters - PMIS 05250

- Project Program:

The package will allow the public and NPS staff to adaptively reuse the historic Relocation Camp Auditorium as the Manzanar National Historic Site Visitor Center and Headquarters. The work involves extensive interior and exterior rehabilitation to reestablish the structure’s historic character. The main assembly room will be developed as the park's visitor contact and interpretation area, with smaller rooms designated as employee offices and supply storage. A contemporary energy-efficient mechanical system will be carefully integrated into the adaptive use design so as not to negatively impact the visitor experience. The missing historic wing (removed in the 1950's, and still existing nearby in Lone Pine as the VFW Hall) will be reconstructed and used for visitor comfort facilities and additional administration and library space.
